Learn More About The Corn Maze

By Iva Cannon

There are lots of ways in which Man can use nature to his advantage to create a work of art. A corn maze can be very beautiful and look as impressive from a bird's eye view as it does on the ground. There are many amazing designs around the world to illustrate this. Getting lost in and finding one's way out of a maze can be lots of fun as well, and they have proven to be a major attraction for tourists over the years.

In Dixon, California, The Guinness Book of World Records has named the world's largest of these mazes five years ago. However, Adventure Acres, which lies just outside of Dayton in Ohio, is home to a maze that is much larger, at just over 60 acres. This particular maze has 8.5 miles of walkways as well.

There's a lot to plan out before planting anything to make a maze. Farmers have to take into account the type of corn they will use throughout the project, dependent on how high and how strong they want it to grow. Additionally, they must be careful to cut the stalk properly, including the inside, where the walkways are supposed to go so that there is no regrowth onto the path.

A very common disease in the stalks is rotting, which can make a huge difference to the overall result. Stalk rotting can happen because of bad fertilization or it could be a moisture problem. Farmers also need to take into account when they plant the corn for the maze, as it is a completely different cycle to planting regular crops which are used for grain.

You can decide what type of mazes you would like to visit based on the ages of those who are going with you. For a family trip or even a kids' birthday party, a daytime maze is perfect. These are generally under 10 feet high and take an hour or less to get through. This, of course, is dependent on the size of the maze. Add a little spice to the journey by leaving clues or puzzles to be solved along the way.

For teenagers, the exact same activity is made even more fun when done at night. A group of teens can experience the thrill of exploring a maze in the dark with only flashlights to guide them. Again, there could be puzzles or riddles to solve along the walkways to add an extra twist.

Adults looking to try something a little different will enjoy the experience of a haunted maze. Not for the faint of heart, and definitely not for kids, this is something no one will ever forget. It makes for a great murder mystery party or a party associated with Halloween.

Across the pond in Britain, the mazes are called maize mazes. There are quite a few of them in the eastern region of England. Farmers offer day trips for families and tourists alike, and there are often other fun things included in the visit. Families can enjoy hay rides, pony rides, petting zoos or even just have a picnic in a designated area. This is one way that farmers are able to make a supplemental income.
