Explore Two Historic Cultures At Adventurous Places To Stay In Haida Gwaii

By Stella Gay

Just a bit west of British Columbia, bordering the United States north of Washington and jutting into the Gulf of Alaska is an archipelago of pristine islands. For adventurous travelers, there is much to see and do here. For generations, the land belonged to Great Britain and was called St. Charlotte Islands. But now, the original islanders are honored for their cultural heritage and visitors from around the world travel here to visit and learn about them.

Though there are several towns peppered along the sea shore and nestled into the local rain forests, this is not a place that can accommodate large numbers of visitors. Advance reservations for lodgings are important and tickets for ferries, planes and other forms of transportation are also recommended. The planning you do to find out what you want to see and do will help you to decide which places to stay in haida gwaii.

The Haida Nation is the culture that has existed in this place for as long as perhaps the ice age. There are two distinct clans. These are the Ravens and the Eagles. Their oral traditions, stories, songs and artwork fill the area with beauty, so tourists hope to come and see these things. In addition to the cultural heritage dating back thousands of years, there is a rich abundance of sea and land activities that make this a worthy vacation destination. Planning a trip is best done keeping in mind what you want to see and do, as that is where you will want to make your reservations for lodging.

Some intrepid travelers will journey to the mystical archipelago to experience wilderness camping. There are sites near towns and along some beaches. Some require advance reservations but others do not. Keeping in mind that this is a season activity, from about July through September will help you to plan this kind of stay.

Sport fishermen travel to have the chance at catching the large salmon that fill the waters here. Lodges are highly popular. They provide excellent rooms, delicious meals, extra evening activities and expert help during day sails. On their boats, the right clothing for cold weather, bait, tackle and any gear required is provided. This is a dream fishing vacation.

Queen Charlotte City is a nice small community with bed and breakfast establishments. There are day excursions that could include a stop at the local farmers market or an ocean front eatery. There are many farms selling fresh products and beautiful seaside views.

Guest houses and lodges are located in Port Clemens, Masset, and Tlell, to name a few. Many are available for rental through the Internet, where photos, amenities, prices and locations are listed. Strolling to local beaches, visiting local artists studios and exploring local rain forest trails are a must.

Popular day sight seeing include the Gwaii Haanas National Park or the Haida Heritage Center and Museum. Activities such as surfing, hiking, and whale watching are all favorites. Though it is possible to book stays in hotels, cabins and private guest homes, it can be nice to get away from the busier spots and stay in the town of Sandspit. It is the only one on Moresby Island. Enjoying this magical archipelago and its two cultures is a visual feast.
